Korean lettering - Gyopo / meaning foreign-born Korean
As a Korean American growing up, I never really felt like I belonged where I grew up or when I went to Korea to visit family. I felt that I was always seen as “other”. Now, I’m embracing it and proud to be called a “gyopo”. It has a history that’s carried by my parents immigrating to the US for a better life and continued by me and my siblings with our lives in the US. I will never rid of my heritage and background, but for me, this term has a meaning of strength and courage.
